We packed up from the cabin, leaving the blazing wifi speeds for a small slot canyon type entrance protecting Gljúfrafoss, just up the road from Seljalandsfoss. After scrambling thru the entrance, the viking hat received more than one smile as we snapped a couple quick photos. Skógafoss was next, rushing down with much more power than the "baby fosses" up until this point. With some decent hiking on top of the falls, we worked our legs a bit before loading up the car and heading towards Landmannalaugar.
Driving thru Hella to the F roads towards Landmannalaugar has blown away any off road experience I've had before. The scenery changes so drastically, and so quickly that it's nearly hard to comprehend. Naturally we used this as an opportunity to ensure we received our money's worth for the viking hat.
After setting up the tent we brought our pre hike meal into the shelter and received more than a handful of odd looks pulling out a couple pre-cooked frozen pizzas and just chomping away. I'm not sure if it was envy or if we threatened the pure experience to those using their backpacking stoves to prepare a freeze dried meal, but either way we were pleased. We hiked the Laugar loop thru the lava field to Brennisteinsalda, and then back to camp.
Prior to the first hike I think we were a little intimidated by some of the warnings for how easy it is to get lost and how difficult the trails might be, but with the longest trail less than 10 kilometers and with abundant trail markers, any concerns we initially had were set aside.
